Temporary Barriers Project Weekly Update - May 18, 2001

The following report on the Temporary Barriers Project is for your information and action, as appropriate.  This report will be transmitted   whenever changes occur to the operation of the barriers, and as a result of modeling and/or field monitoring of water levels in the south Delta.

STATUS AS OF: May 18, 2001

Head of Old River Barrier (HORB):
This barrier at the HORB site is operating normally with all six culverts open.

Plans have changed for the HORB removal. Now DWR will begin removing the HORB on Wednesday, May 23, to provide outmigrating salmon smolts on the San Joaquin River a couple extra days to move past the Old River confluence.

Agricultural Barriers (Old River near DMC, Middle River, Grant Line Canal):
The Grant Line Canal barrier is operating normally (the GLC barrier culvert flap gates are tied open, which is normal when the HORB is operating). DWR took action Wednesday, May 16, to tie open the flap gates on the other two barriers, in response to rising Delta smelt salvage numbers at the export facilities. The Middle River barrier culverts flap gates were tied open on Wednesday as directed. However, during a routine site visit today, DWR personnel determined that the culvert flap gates on the Old River at DMC barrier were NOT tided open properly and were still operating tidally. DWR's construction office and Delta Field Division personnel have scheduled divers and support crews to fix the problem tomorrow (May 19) and ensure the flap gates are properly tied open.

A boat tender will be available at the DMC and GLC sites to assist recreational boaters in using the boat ramp to pass across the barrier. Boat ramp operations for the DMC and GLC barriers are 0800-1800 hours Monday through Friday and 0700 - 1900 hours on weekends and holidays.

Modeling Forecasts:
New modeling forecasts will be made on Monday, May 21. These forecasts will assume the HORB is removed and all the flap gates on the ag barriers are tied open (properly).
