Temporary Barriers Project Weekly Update - May 14, 2001

The following report on the Temporary Barriers Project is for your information and action, as appropriate.  This report will be transmitted   whenever changes occur to the operation of the barriers, and as a result of modeling and/or field monitoring of water levels in the south Delta.

STATUS AS OF:  May 14, 2001

Head of Old River Barrier (HORB):
This barrier at the HORB site is operating normally with all six culverts open.  Modeling last week (attached) showed water levels rising significantly with the closure of the Grant Line Canal barrier (the study modeled the GLC barrier as "closed" however, it wasn't actually closed completely until May 9--hence the CDEC data on the plots doesn't correspond well to the forecasted stages).  We are doing a new study now with three culverts closed at the HORB.  If forecasts still show water levels above 0.0 feet MSL, we'll direct O&M to close the three culverts (most likely on 5/15 or 5/16).  Next week, May 21st, we plan to begin removing the HORB, as the VAMP experiment comes to an end and exports start ramping up.

Agricultural  Barriers (Old River near DMC, Middle River, Grant Line Canal):
The Middle River, Old River near DMC, and Grant Line Canal barriers are installed and operating normally(the GLC barrier culvert flap gates are tied open, which is normal when the HORB is operating).
A boat tender will be available at the DMC and GLC sites to assist recreational boaters in using the boat ramp to pass across the barrier. Boat ramp operations for the DMC and GLC barriers are 0800-1800 hours Monday through Friday and 0700 - 1900 hours on weekends and holidays.

Modeling Forecasts:
Modeling completed last week (see attachment) showed that low-low water levels would be above 0.0 feet MSL during the May 3 - May 13 period at all of the three stations we model/monitor.  Because we closed the GLC barrier last week, we saw an improvement in water levels above the ag barriers, which should permit DWR to close some of the culverts at the HORB this week.

Notes:
New modeling is ongoing today.  We expect to close three culverts at the HORB this week and prepare to begin removing the HORB beginning next Monday.
